07/04/07 canal nantes a brest Gourec

I have always found chub to be difficult to locate on the canal and river systems , so when I came across what appeared to be a couple of classic looking chub pegs just above the campsite at Gourec, I knew it would not be long before I would be tempted to investigate. I only had a couple of hours to fish but in these small enclosed swims
that is often plenty. The swim I chose had overhanging trees down into the water where debris had accumulated ; it really did look fishy. It was deeper than I imagined
at approx 2.5 metres with a steady flow and the wind was once again easterly it was also a very bright evening . I kicked off with a 1.25 jolly 014 to 010 shogun hooklenght , hookbait was red maggot and again I loose fed caster and just a few red maggots. It look longer than expected to get a first fish , some 20 mins, then a small roach and a bleak in successive casts. Then nothing for a further 20 mins , not the start
I was hoping for. I had a couple of 6 oz roach in the next 10mins but still no sign of the chub . At this point I decided to introduce a little groundbait, there was no immediate response but some 15 minutes later a tentative bite produced a hefty lunge towards the debris, could this be the elusive chub? afraid not! after a few minutes a bream of some 4.5 lbs was in the net. The next three put ins produced two slightly smaller bream then nothing for a further 20 mins. By this time light was fading
I added a smaller bream of around 1.5lbs and a skimmer of 12 ozs, a rudd and a bleak
just at the death . 15 lbs in two hours thats ok !
